F*ck it: let's start a design studio.

Musings by:

A little introduction… Hi, I’m Greg, a recovering creative director with 20 years of experience. I got unceremoniously let go from a technology company and subsequently embarked on the nutball journey of starting my own design studio.

As so many people in the technology space have witnessed first-hand. It was a regular spring WFH day when suddenly, I got the boot. (Just when I saved up for a new bass guitar, dammit!).

So, what next? Job search? Sure! Reach out to the network? Duh! Then I think, with existential career crises, something becomes anew… F*ck it…let’s start a design studio.

And holy crap, I gotta hustle… LIKE. RIGHT. NOW!!

Therefore, with a lot of caffeine and hastily written notes & checklists on my phone, I’ve rebirthed my design agency, Idea Circus. I say rebirthed because I’ve freelanced before, but this is something different. Maybe it’s more a feeling than action, but this seems the right time.

Because, let’s face it, who needs a boss when you can be your own boss and work 80 hours a week instead of a measly 40? And bonus, I can fire myself if I underperform!

For those who’ve not freelanced or started something up before. I’ve started three; two failed miserably, and one sold that got me out of debt. An amazing track record, right? However, I still get a thrill from startups… for myself and for others.

Additionally, with SO many people recently out of the workforce from the pandemic tech boom, I do believe that with all these very smart and well… “severanced” (Eh. that’s not a word… I mean recently laid off and well-compensated severance packaged) people out there, are going to find a lot of time on their hands. I predict we’ll see a huge startup boom, and these amazing ideas will start quickly. I hope to be one of those ideas.

A tad about myself some more for context (finally get to the point, man!)

I’m a design junkie with 21+ years of creative and consulting experience in the digital landscape. I’ve formerly been at eBay, Demandbase, and many other B2B, B2C & technology companies with multiple rebrands and creative design chops that I am proud of.

I’ve been there in the design trenches, and boy, do I get it; tiny budgets, tighter timelines, and endless fire drills. Idea Circus can be that embedded strategic design team who focuses on the client-side production environment for your Marketing team… without being “in-house.”

My studio, Idea Circus, can partner with your team on creative solutions that provide agency-level production services without agency-level prices. The skillset is everything Creative Production, Animation, Motion Graphics, Video & Content Storytelling. Check out the capabilities to learn more. </endPitch>

So, here’s a little shout-out for myself in a transitional and very exciting time. I raise you a glass of your favorite liquid beverage. Maybe someday, we’ll have some branded water bottles, so, cheers to embracing the chaos!

Now, back to work. I have a client presentation to prepare and a sink full of dirty coffee mugs to tackle.

Context River Brand Project

Context River

I had the opportunity to brand a startup, named Context River. Data is a river. Data works better in context. That’s the brand concept behind this new startup. Project by Idea Circus

Rafay Systems Rebrand Project

How do you elevate a company’s brand? Well, you call me, of course 😉
Self-aggrandizing aside, I had the opportunity to help Rafay, an enterprise AI and cloud services company specializing in accelerated computing infrastructure. The Marketing team wanted a rebrand, technically it’s a brand refresh, but we updated a lot of stuff. Here’s a breakdown of all the projects for this new project launch.
